It's another fab book from Fab Press. Billed as the first volume of the international guide to weird and wonderful films on DVD, this chunky little volume is perfect for dipping into. As you'd expect there's an eclectic and interesting mix of material here - from the mainstream to the decidedly obscure. Obviously the first thing to do is run through lists of favourites: The Thing, Fight Club, Don't Look Now, The Wicker Man etc. Yep. Some of the choices are a little perplexing - like who's really interested in all those James Bond movies? But these things always subject and everyone's got an opinion (like, where's American History X, Twelve Monkeys and Kafka?). Still, that's what volume 2 is for, hopefully.

The reviews are generally well-written and interesting, and the book lives up to its title by including details of the additional material included in the DVD over the video or other releases. Nathaniel Thompson does a grand job, and he's ably assisted by Stephen Thrower and Tim Greaves, both headline names worth seeking out.

If you love film you'll love this book, even if, like me, you still watch VHS rather than DVD.
