Will Goodman, crusty hero of this odd little tale, is a man with a cause - to stop the road builders in their tracks, to destroy Babylon and to show us the way to freedom. And, on the other side, is evil Sir Marcus Farkus, head of Roads 4U, out to destroy nature and who builds roads over ley lines in order to out-magick the crusty pagan hordes. The story’s too silly to describe, it’s pure tosh, with frequent, unerotic sex scenes, plenty of anarcho-crusty mysticism and the occasional laugh (not all of them intended I’m sure).
If one of the aims of the book is to build sympathy for the road protests than this fails dismally, by the end of the book I didn’t really care what happened, even though I think Reclaim The Streets are one of the most interesting groups to emerge in recent years. Somehow nothing of the politics behind the road protests emerges from the story, though there’s enough detail in the descriptions to suggest that the author’s probably a crusty himself. The only other thing worth mentioning is that Sir Marcus, shit-eating industrialist deviant, is by far the most interesting character in the book, certainly more interesting than young Will who deserves to be knocked down by a speeding BMW next time he ventures out of his squat…
